Overview:

Following the Legion implementation for the 275th, this post will serve as an outline of the Legion structure of the 501st, 107th and 275th. Changes regarding the Stormtroopers/439th and the Special Operations Brigade will be announced as they progress but I will briefly outline their role in this post as well.

Legion Implementation & Purpose:

Originally planned for the 501st, the change from Battalion to Legion had some obvious benefits not only for the members of 501st but served as a test for further implementation on the server. When becoming Brigadier General; in coordination with @Hideyoshi I was able to use the data and observations from the 501st Legion change and implement a similar structure to the 107th.

The 501st Legion Change was considered a complete improvement for all former 31st Regiments; adding better loadouts and a combined Legion that are all considered part of the same group. The goal was that you wouldn’t have any struggling or dead regiments with the battalion system with the continued implementation of the Legions. Every member of the legion is together unlike Battalions where the only similarity was the name before the regiment. This allows for Legions to hold more frequent Training, to have better coordination in events and to have a more welcoming environment. A common concern for regiments that were struggling or dead (as in just the CO was in the regiment) was that even when they were able to recruit players, those players usually felt isolated and as a result left that regiment or the server. To counteract this, the Legion system has all members part of the same core group with subgroups that act as specialties but at the end of the day, every member of every subgroup is either a subordinate or superior of the same core group.

Each Legion is capable of supporting itself during combat with dedicated Heavies, Supports & Specialised Squads within the Legion that are able to synchronise themselves to be more effective than a Battalion in combat. Where most Battalions would have a Heavy and/or Support per regiment; this would often negate that Support/Heavies role. Legions have more Heavies, more Supports and more specialised roles to make them more effective in combat and in organising their regiment structure.

Why is every Battalion being formed into a Legion?

The simplest answer to this question is because Legions have proven to be more effective currently than the Battalions have been. The 501st and 107th Legion implementation has allowed AHC to observe how the Legions have impacted the server and events and we have decided that Legions provide a clear benefit over the Battalion Structure. Although the Legion implementation for 501st was a clear benefit to their previous structure it still allowed AHC to see how well it could form the rest of the army structure. The 107th Legion implementation allowed AHC to see how well the Legions could be applied to other Battalions. Allowing the former composition of Shock & Riot to turn into a fully supported Legion, with specialised squads and a better management of Heavies & Supports. Using this continued observation of the 107th and 501st it was eventually decided to fully pursue the complete Legion overhaul. I believe the most important thing to consider with these changes is that how you see the 501st and 107th currently is not going to be the exact end result; there will be multiple buffs & additions to the Legions that will give them an extra edge in combat and coordination. This has also forced the continued Legion changes. The Battalions that do not eventually become Legions will be left behind; with the benefits of the Legions not being able to transfer into those Battalions. In the short run, it may seem turning everything into a Legion is bad but I urge everyone to wait and see the end result.

Who is behind the Legion Implementation?

Originally designed by Hideyoshi and Pro, I have since taken up seeing through the Legion changes with alterations that I see as beneficial to the Legions and the Server. As such, I actively encourage any feedback, suggestions or issues sent to me directly.

Doesn’t forming every Battalion into a Legion take away their uniqueness and specialities?

Overall, no. Seen in the case of 501st, it supplemented their previous composition, for 107th it added new roles and specialised Riot away from SK (especially with the 107th Loadout re-work), for 275th it’s mixed and I’ll elaborate. Shadow is removed from the 275th but isn’t gone from the server. Sky is staying with a better loadout to give them more options in combat than they have currently. 275th Heavies keep their mortars as do CL4 in the base regiment and the addition of their subgroup (Strike Troopers) will give them more options off-ship vehicle/mobility-wise with the added benefits of a long range combat option. Out of everything, seeing through all these changes is paramount before forming a harsh perspective. And Stormtroopers will get the benefit of having sub-units when their changes roll around. For those who are still discontent with being in a Legion or would prefer an isolated specialised unit, that is what SOB will cover. I’ve seen a lot of opinions especially regarding the 275th changes but I’m confident these changes will be a positive addition to those within 275th and the server overall.

What about 439th and the Special Operations Brigade?

The structure of the 439th and SOB will be different to the current Legion structure described in this post. As those changes come closer to fruition they will get additional posts with information retaining to their specific changes. In general Stormtroopers will be given a better support structure and have additional subgroups inside them to support them. Medics and Supports in the Stormtrooper Detachment will also have better equipment initially than Legion Supports/Medics. Special Operations Brigade will have specialised units and elite squadrons that will provide variety and a challenge for those willing to put in the effort to command one. Those should complement the Legion changes and more information will be announced in the future.

I’ve been playing the server for X amount of months/years, when will the Army stop getting reworks and find a system that just works?

One of the more interesting questions that I also ask myself, this topic can be debated for hours and always extends to the server overall as well. How I’ve best understood it is that the system changes when not only the people at the top change but also when the attitude of those within it change. There is never one ‘fit-all’ structure that solves every single issue while giving the most benefit but I believe that the Legion system as we continue to implement it can find a good balance between solving current issues and allowing us to provide players with the most benefit. From what we’ve seen from the current Legions and hope to see from the future Legions, we can adapt and change certain aspects as time continues. In my opinion the best system is one that has the ability to be fluid when required, while still having a set structure from the top down. The Legions give us a chance to experiment and design squads, finding the right combination to have a unique purpose while still retaining their set structure. Battalions and other Army structures on IG have experienced moments where multiple regiments are just completely dead or other regiments have completely eclipsed others. My goal is to find the best balance between all Regiments and I believe the Legions are the best way to see this through. Already we’ve seen consistent numbers within the Legions and believe this will be able to be spread evenly when the current Battalions turn into Legions.

How has the Legion changes affected training?

Regiment Training has always been a continuing issue on Imperial Gaming. This issue was designed to be tackled with the Legion Changes. A very common excuse for not running Trainings is “Not having enough people on”. The Legion Structure allows this to change. In addition to having enough Troopers to hold more than enough Trainings per week, meeting the training quota per week but also having the ability to run Squad Specific Trainings within their Legions.

(05/07 - 03/10)

Legions show a clear improvement on the Trainings per week and as can be seen in the ‘Failed Weekly Quota’ section, MUD Troopers were carrying the weight of the Battalion Trainings for 275th and similar with Stormtroopers carrying the 439th. Regardless of reason, the Legions have resolved the issue of ‘not having enough people on’ and have been able to allow all players in these Legions to receive regular training; giving a clear reason to AHC to the benefits of the Legion system in regards to training. Ideally we will see this trend continue as the other current Battalions are turned into Legions.Obviously this data only shows just under three months but I’ve decided it’s a reasonable basis for comparing the Legions to the Battalions.

How will the continuing Legion changes affect DEFCON Stations and Events?

This is one of the topics that provides the largest benefit for the Legion system over the Battalion system. In terms of DEFCON Stations, AHC will be able to assign larger areas with additional responsibilities to the Legions. One of the drawbacks of the Battalion system is that the only way the DEFCON Stations could work is if every Regiment in every Battalion had 5+ Troopers for every single attack. With the Legions we are able to spread them out across multiple areas and still ensure they’re protected with the Special Operation Brigade Squads/Units handling niche Battlestation assignments. This should allow us to have a flexible and effective DEFCON Station with the Legion system. In terms of Events, Legion coordination and communication has been seen to be much more effective than the Battalion system. The goal is that the Legions will be able to compose multiple large assault groups that are able to keep momentum with more Heavies, Supports and their subgroups. Each Legion has been designed with a specific goal in mind, with 501st focussing on Assault, 107th with Security/Defence and the 275th with Mobility. Stormtroopers will be able to fulfill any role that is lacking during events or support them with the SOB having tactical freedom, allowing their COs/Squads to complete objectives and roles they deem appropriate unless specifically recalled or requested from AHC.

Legion Structure:

The Legion Structure above is the design for the 501st, 107th and 275th and shows the breakdown of the subgroups. Each Legion has a capacity of 20 and how they split them into the subgroups is up to them. You could for example just have 20 default or any other variation provided it doesn’t exceed the capacity in the “Total Slots” section. Legions also need to be aware of the Minimum and Maximum ranks as well.

Donator Roles:

  • For Subgroup 2 (Scouts, Riot & Strike) 3 of the total slots are Donator Slots and allow for someone in the Legion to purchase the role with permission from the CO. Once they donate they will have their current rank transferred into the subgroup. For example a Private First Class in 501st Infantry would become a Private First Class 501st Scout.

  • For Subgroup 1 (501st Commandos, Honour Guard & Sky Unit) 2 of the total slots are Donator Slots and allow for someone in the Legion to purchase the role with permission from the CO. Once they donate they will either be set to JSGT if they are below it or transfer with their rank if they are above JSGT+. For example, a Private First Class in 501st Infantry would become a Junior Sergeant in 501st Commando but a Staff Sergeant in 501st Infantry would become a Staff Sergeant in 501st Commandos.

  • Note that for all donations for subgroup roles the person donating must be in the Legion already and have permission from the CO/LCO

Donator Squads:

  • Legions may decide they want to replace one of their current squads: Heavy, Support, SG1 and/or SG2 with a squad with a different specialisation. In Coordination with their LCO, HoA & Management they may design and donate for a replacement to one of the aforementioned squads.

  • For example a Legion may decide they would prefer a demolitions squad instead of their heavy. They would go their LCO and draft a proposal and bring that proposal to the HoA and Management; once donated for the Heavy squad would be replaced with a Demolitions Squad

  • Donator Squads are permanent until:

1) A different Donator Squad replaces the current one

2) The LCO & CO want to revert the Donator Squad back to its default or

3) In rare cases when members in the Donator Squad abuse their equipment

More on Donator Squads will be announced when they are implemented.

Command Structure:

Each legion has a:

 Legion Commanding Officer

  • A General in Imperial High Command is the Legion Commanding Officer

  • They are tasked with managing all squad layouts, donations, combat direction, feedback from the Legion they’re assigned to, solving any issues external involving the Legion, carrying out punishments to that Legion’s officers if required, observing and reporting the progress of the Commanding Officer and the Legion to IHC

  • Is expected to have effective and regular contact with their Legion, if not directly leading them if they see fit

Commanding Officer

  • Is Chief Warrant Officer+ in that Legion

  • They are tasked with overseeing regiment training, direct leadership in combat, day-to-day Legion management, solving internal regiment issues, recruiting and kicking Legion members, carrying out the LCO’s instructions and ensuring the continued good behaviour and discipline of the regiment

Executive Officer

  • Is Junior Sergeant+ in that Legion

  • Is given tasks and responsibilities at the Commanding Officers and Legion Commanding Officer’s discretion and is expected to fulfill them

This is in addition to all rank/group specific expectations outlined in the “IG Database”

Thank you for taking the time to read this post, as mentioned before please DM me directly with any questions, concerns etc. I am usually able to reply quickly and will answer as many people/questions as I can.

I assume SOB will have regiments like Shadow Unit, ARC Troopers (MAYBE), EVO Troopers, Varactyl Squad, that sorta gig. Will it have a CO? Or just be a bunch of regiments, that answer to one Battalion / Legion Commander?

Wrong, they'll become a Junior Sergeant (or if their current rank if it's higher) 501st Scout.

This, in my opinion, is a win for Army. However it is not a win for everyone else. Recently, the placings for events have been whoever has been the most active (well, thats the trend really). An example of this would be the numerous placings of the 439th ST's for "Overwhelming numbers". If this is the trend for placings, we'll be seeing only Legions being placed with the odd outlyer of specialized regiments and specifically made events

This is my own personal opinion anyway

Correct, SOB will have a pool of Elite Squadrons and Specialised Units that can be swapped in and out when IHC feels a role needs to be filled. They will report to a General same as the old Battalions who will also give them assignments and trainings if needed. Each Squadron/Unit will have a Commander but will not need to report to each other only the SOB General. But as I said I will have a post in the future regarding the SOB, I'm personally very excited to see it come to fruition and I'm sure people in the community are as well.

The purpose of this post is to clarify any misconceptions or confusion. You can also find all this information with your CO/LCOs as I've shown below:

You can purchase a replacement subroup with management agreeing on it and it can be taken

Pretty much it with some other side stuff and if you got questions. They're answered above.
