Additions to climbswep / Advanced climbswep

Ingame when I see Climb SWEP being used, it looks, sort of unrealistic in a way. It also requires small amounts of skill to climb a building. There aren't that many techniques to get on top of a building other than click 3 times and turn 90 degrees between each climb.

So, I thought... What could make climbswep a lot better and more skill oriented?
I then came across a Roblox game called "Parkour" and the mechanics used are, in my opinion. Perfect for climbing structures and is skill oriented and can also come with much more realistic animations
And before you guys click off because I'm using Roblox as an example, hear me out.

In this topic, I will be bringing many new ideas to the table to improve climb SWEP. All credits goes to hudzell for creating the mechanics I'm about to use as examples throughout this topic

Simple Mechanics

This section will be covering simple mechanics that could be modified to Climb SWEP to make it much better

- Wallrun

A classic popular technique used in many games, this isn't very special but could be added or made into a completely new SWEP.

- Vaulting

Another classic popular technique used in many games although with a twist.

Flawed Vault - A vault that does just a vault with nothing else, only used to get over obstacles.

Perfect Vault - A vault that gains height over an obstacle, you must perform 2 jumps.
First Jump - The jump that will determine whether it will be a perfect vault or not, you must jump early before you reach the obstacle.

Second Jump - This jump will be held down or pressed after performing the first jump to gain height, as seen in the GIF.

- Climb

The climb will be done when near the edge of a building, it is performed by pressing the spacebar when near the edge.

- Slide

The slide will be used to slide under obstacles [C].

- Landing Conditioning

Flawed Conditioning - if holding SHIFT in the air, the amount of damage taken from falling will be reduced by 25%.

Average Conditioning - if holding SHIFT just before you hit the ground, the amount of damage taken from falling will be reduced by 50%.

Perfect Conditioning - if pressing SHIFT 1/8th of a second before hitting the ground, you will take no fall damage.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

- Wall Boosting

Wall boosting is a technique where you fling yourself upwards to reach much higher buildings.
It is done by jumping, then grabbing on to the wall and then flicking upwards to the right or left. To balance this, you can only wallboost twice per wall.

- Long Jumps / Ledge Pushes

Long Jumps are used to boost yourself forwards and make enhance a normal jump to turn it into a long jump [Scroll wheel + Space] . 
Of course, this can be abused so to balance it. it has a 3 second cooldown. 

it can only be done when near a ledge, so it is very risky to pull off. Along with that, you must also press the scroll wheel a millisecond before the jump button, so the timing is tight.

FORCE USERS

Force users have an additional ability with this.

After the initial jump. They may perform a spin/flip in the air, there are 2 versions of this
Upwards spin - This makes the user flip in the air causing them to go upwards (basically a double jump) which then let them combo in to other techniques

Forwards spin - This makes the user to dash forwards causing them to gain speed and combo in to other techniques

ADDITIONAL THINGS

Some items that can be bought with points can be used to add to their SWEP

- Zipline Kit

Creates a zipline that you and others can ride. [X] for initial [Left click to end]

- Spring Kit

Creates a "spring" to allow you to do perfect vaults to gain height anywhere you want. [X]

Of course, yet again. these can be exploited, so to balance them. You can only have 3 active at once and only one kit active at once.

This is an interesting idea to say the least and posses some rather interesting movements that could have some good RP usage within the server. However, In terms of it being implemented into the server I do not see it happening due to the following reasons;

  1. No such addon exists within GMOD and would require the development team to put hours of work in to even attempt to recreate this, this is time that could better be used for further server optimisation and other touch ups.
  2. This addon would most likely increase peoples issues with low frame rates, something none of us really want especially with them already not being the greatest during events when slideshow mode is activated.
  3. This would create more opportunities for ClimbSWEP abuse and general mingy behaviour.
  4. This system is not user friendly for newer players to the community.

climb sweep abuse is already warnable don't need it to be banable 

only like 10% of our ship would actually have the physical strength to pull most of these off including force users 

the server uses its own custom climb swep.

Actually I used to have this add-on https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=870925571 and the maker of the add-on left in some smart coding thing that I have no idea what it does stuff but thats besides the point, if you look at these wOS add ons they have some really cool animations that can save hours of work (correct me if im wrong)

That would add the Wiltos roll addon however would still require the Dev team to integrate it into a workable climb swep add-on if they didn't want it as a separate feature, this would also still mean that the rest of the animations and other features would have to be developed and integrated. I like your thinking though :)

Deadass tryna turn IG into a multiplayer Mirrors Edge.

As said before, these are not actual addons on the workshop meaning that the dev. team would spend countless hours making this shifting complete focus and as a result, having no time for other updates.

Another thing is that I don't see most people actually being bothered to learn this climbswep system, I see some committed people mastering it but only a small number of IG's grand population.

In saying all this, I do believe that it's an interesting idea but probably not for SWRP.

Fun fact: The climbswep version we use comes with wall running. It's just disabled because it's stupid over powered.

A few negative things with your suggestion:

Vaulting - Requires a custom animation for the client and the server, Yucky work.

Tiers of Conditioning - Why, tiers? Just make it a relation between the time of the button press and the damage that would be supplied, it should either be a logarithmic increase or a linear increase in damage reduction.

Theoretically, most of the development that would be useful is done for us here (Pretty sure that's the game mode I'm thinking of, could be wrong. It's 2AM), turning it into a SWEP could be time consuming but not too difficult.

 

Neutral, it's up to the development team to decide if they want to put time into this.

Even though mirrors edge star wars rp would be amazing.

You have to consider some points:

- Were all storm troopers trained in parkour?

- How many people would this actually apply to in rp

- Does it really bring that much gameplay value?

- Is it worth the potential impact on performance for the server?

With those in mind I'm going to deny this based off community feedback and my own. 

Maybe when (probably if) we are graced with S&Box stuff like this could be considered
